Why you need an Arabic criminal record certificate translation
Anyone applying for a residence permit, the Red-White-Red Card or Austrian citizenship usually has to present a criminal record certificate from their country of origin. Depending on the country it is called a police clearance certificate, certificate of good conduct or non conviction certificate. Employers, professional chambers and adoption procedures ask for it occasionally as well.
Because the document is issued in Arabic, the authorities require a certified translation. It is produced by court sworn and certified translators and is recognised by authorities, courts and employers throughout Austria.
Why timing is critical
Criminal record certificates have a short validity almost everywhere. Austrian authorities generally accept the certificate only if it is no more than a few months old at the time of application, three months is the figure most often quoted. The clock starts on the issue date in your home country, not on the date of translation. So plan backwards: issue, apostille or legalisation where required, dispatch, translation, submission. That is why we prefer to translate the certificate the moment it arrives and send the PDF in advance.
- Apply for the certificate only once your appointment or submission date is in sight
- Have the apostille or legalisation done in the country of origin before dispatch
- Send us the scan as soon as you receive it, the original can follow later
What the certified translation has to contain
We translate the whole document: letterhead of the issuing authority, reference number, purpose, result, issue date, validity note, stamps, signatures and the reverse side. Where the certificate lists entries, offence, court, date and sentence are reproduced faithfully, without comment or omission.
The spelling of your name follows the machine readable zone of your passport, so that certificate, passport and every other translated document match. Hijri dates are supplemented with the Gregorian date. Stamps, QR codes and verification numbers are described so the authority can check authenticity.

Apostille and legalisation
Whether the certificate also needs an apostille or a legalisation depends on the country of origin. For states party to the Hague Apostille Convention, the apostille from the competent office in the issuing country is usually sufficient. For most other Arab states legalisation is the norm: certification by the foreign ministry there, followed by the Austrian embassy or consulate. Both should be on the original before we translate, because the note is translated as well. As practice varies, confirm the exact requirement with the receiving authority in advance.

Frequently asked questions about criminal record certificates
Validity, apostille and process.
There is no single rule. Many authorities require the certificate to be no older than three months at submission, some accept six months. The issue date in the country of origin is what counts. Ask the office in charge for its exact requirement.
Yes. Send us the scan as soon as you have it and we start immediately. The translation is attached to a copy. If the apostille or legalisation is added later, that addition has to be translated afterwards.
Yes, this matters. We use the spelling from the machine readable zone of your passport. Please always send us the passport data page, even if only the certificate is to be translated.
That depends on the issuing country. Some Arab states have joined the Apostille Convention, most others legalise through the foreign ministry and the Austrian embassy. Sort this out before dispatch, because arranging it afterwards from abroad is cumbersome.
We translate the certificate exactly as issued, without comment. The assessment is up to the authority. Everything is treated in strict confidence, with a non disclosure agreement on request.
Yes. For work, residence or marriage in an Arab country you often need the Austrian certificate in Arabic. Ask the embassy of the destination country whether certification by the Austrian foreign ministry is required first.
