Arabic Marriage Certificate Translation

Arabic ↔ GermanArabic ↔ English

Certified translation of your Arabic marriage certificate or marriage contract for family reunification, residence permits, name changes and the registry office. Recognised by every Austrian authority.

Your contact

I know the marriage contracts and civil register extracts from Syria, Jordan, Egypt and the Gulf states in detail and check every certificate for completeness before translation.

When you need an Arabic marriage certificate translation

You will almost always need an Arabic marriage certificate translation for a procedure with a long lead time: family reunification at MA 35 or a district authority, a residence permit as a family member, a name change after marriage, registration of the marriage at the registry office, or an application for Austrian citizenship.

These offices accept certified translations only. They are produced by court sworn and certified translators in Austria, carry a stamp, signature and certification clause, and are firmly attached to a copy of the original.

Marriage contract, certificate or family book: what the authority needs

Many Arabic countries do not have a single marriage document but several. Which one the Austrian authority requires depends on the procedure, and often two are needed together.

Marriage contract (Aqd Zawaj)

The religious or civil marriage contract listing the dower, witnesses and proxies. From Syria, Jordan and Egypt usually the main document, sometimes several pages long.

Marriage certificate

The civil register extract or confirmation of marriage, shorter and with a register number. Often the document of choice for MA 35.

Family book

The family register extract shows both spouses and the children on one page. Often the most practical solution for family reunification.

Confirmation of marriage

Subsequent court confirmation of a religiously concluded marriage. Without it, authorities generally do not recognise a purely religious marriage.

Typical pitfalls with Arabic marriage certificates

The certified translation reproduces the whole document, including stamps, witnesses, dower and marginal notes. Four points matter most in our experience:

  • Names of both spouses and their parents transliterated exactly as in the passports. A different spelling often delays family reunification by weeks.
  • Date of marriage: many contracts carry a Hijri date or both dates. We convert and state both.
  • Religious marriage contracts from Syria or Iraq usually need court confirmation and the foreign ministry's stamp. If either is missing, we tell you before translating.
  • Handwritten entries such as the dower amount or the witnesses' names are translated in full. Illegible passages are marked as illegible.

Apostille or legalisation by country of origin

Whether the marriage certificate needs an apostille or a legalisation before translation is decided by the receiving authority. Common practice:

  • Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon are, to our knowledge, not party to the Hague Apostille Convention. The usual route is legalisation via the foreign ministry of the country of origin and the Austrian representation there.
  • Gulf states: Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain generally work with the apostille, while the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Kuwait usually require legalisation.
Before ordering, clarify with MA 35, the registry office or the district authority which authentication is required. We translate afterwards so all endorsements are included. We describe general practice here and do not give legally binding advice.

A marriage certificate is usually one to three pages, a marriage contract with annexes sometimes more. The certified translation is normally ready within one to three working days, express on request. The price depends on length, legibility and language direction; you receive an individual quote in advance.

Frequently asked questions about marriage certificate translation

Answered briefly.

The authority generally requires a state registered marriage, meaning the contract with court confirmation or the civil register extract. Ask the office which document it expects, and we translate exactly that one.

Yes, the certified translation reproduces the whole document, including the dower, the witnesses and the proxies. Nothing is omitted or summarised.

For one to three pages, usually one to three working days from order confirmation. Express is available on request; just tell us the date of your appointment.

Often yes, because the family book also lists the children. We translate both documents together and make sure all names are spelt identically in both translations.

For a name change in Austria you usually need the certified translation of the marriage certificate and your passport. We adopt the passport spelling so the new name is consistent everywhere.

A marriage validly concluded and registered in the country of origin is generally recognised in Austria; the registry office or authority checks this in the respective procedure. The certified translation is the basis for that check.
