When you need a certified Arabic German translation
As soon as you present an Arabic document to an Austrian office, it will normally ask for a certified translation into German. This applies to getting married at the registry office, residence permits and family reunification, the recognition of a degree (Nostrifikation), exchanging a driving licence, court proceedings and criminal record certificates for a new employer.
A plain translation is not enough. The authority needs to be sure that the content, names, dates, stamps and annotations of the original have been reproduced completely and correctly. That is exactly what the certification confirms.
For certified translations I work at Fachdolmetscher with sworn and court certified translators (allgemein beeidete und gerichtlich zertifizierte Übersetzerinnen und Übersetzer), who produce the translations. They are recognised by authorities, courts and universities throughout Austria.
What a certified translation must contain in Austria
In Austria a translation counts as certified when it has been produced by a sworn and court certified translator and carries a certification clause. The clause confirms that the translation corresponds to the original or the copy that was presented.
So that your translation is accepted without queries, we check four things on every copy:
- Round seal and signature of the sworn translator on every issued copy.
- A certification clause stating the date, the language direction and whether an original, a certified copy or a scan was presented.
- The translation firmly attached to a copy of the source document so that both parts stay together.
- Every stamp, annotation, signature and handwritten note reproduced in full, including the reverse side.

Apostille and legalisation: Syria, Iraq, Egypt and the Gulf
A certified translation confirms that the translation is accurate, not that the original is genuine. Many Austrian offices therefore also require the Arabic document itself to be authenticated. There are two routes: the apostille for countries that have joined the Hague Convention, and diplomatic legalisation for all others.
Syria, Iraq and Egypt are not part of the Apostille Convention. Documents from these countries are usually legalised first by the foreign ministry of the issuing country and then by the competent Austrian representation abroad. The picture in the Gulf is mixed, some states have joined the convention and others have not. Before ordering the translation, ask the receiving authority which form of authentication it expects.
The legalisation stamps are translated as well. Ideally, send us the document once all stamps are on it, or tell us that a legalisation is still to follow. We will then plan the addendum from the start.
Arabic dialects, names and the correct spelling
Arabic documents are written in Modern Standard Arabic but often contain regional terms, local names of authorities and handwritten entries. I am Aliaa Azzouqa, MA, a native Arabic speaker with Standard Arabic and Levantine dialect competence, and I work with documents from every Arab country.
Transliterating names is the most delicate part. One and the same Arabic name can be written in Latin letters in several ways. Austrian authorities adopt the spelling from the passport, specifically from its machine readable zone according to the ICAO standard. If the translation deviates from it, you get queries or, in the worst case, two different identities in official registers.
This is why I ask for a copy of the passport of every person named in the document. I adopt the spelling used there and add a note if the original uses a different form. Your translation then matches the rest of your paperwork.

Frequently asked questions about certified translations
Answers to the questions we hear most often.
The price depends on the type of document, its length, the urgency and the number of certified copies. You receive a binding quote in advance with no hidden costs. Our pricing page gives an overview of document types and the factors that shape the price.
A clearly legible scan or photo is enough for the quote and the translation itself. Whether the certification may be based on the copy or the original has to be presented depends on the receiving office. The certification clause records which version was used.
That is decided by the office where you present the document. Documents from Syria, Iraq or Egypt often have to be legalised because these countries are not part of the Apostille Convention. Clarify this beforehand and we will translate the legalisation stamps as well.
Yes, in both directions, and Arabic English as well. Certified translations into Arabic are needed, for example, for marriages, inheritances or company formations in Arab countries. Check with the office in the destination country which form of certification it requires.
Standard documents of one to five pages are usually ready within one to three working days. Long contracts or court files take longer, and we state the exact date in the quote. Express delivery is available on request.
Yes. Certified translations by sworn and court certified translators are recognised by Austrian authorities, courts and universities in every federal province. For use abroad, an additional authentication may be required.
We adopt the spelling from your passport, because Austrian authorities follow it. Please send us a copy of the passport of every person who appears in the document. Any different spelling in the original is noted in the translation.
Yes. If you have to present the translation to several authorities, simply order additional certified copies with it. They are issued at the same time and save you a later reorder.
