Who asks for a passport or ID card translation
An Arabic passport translation for Austria may sound unnecessary, since the data page is partly bilingual. In practice Austrian offices ask for a certified translation all the time: the immigration authority (MA 35 in Vienna) for a residence permit, the registry office when you give notice of marriage, the citizenship office, banks when you open an account, notaries and courts.
The issuing authority, endorsements, extensions, visas and border stamps are usually in Arabic only. A certified translation makes the whole document readable. It is produced by court sworn and certified translators and carries a stamp, signature and certification clause.
What the certified translation has to contain
We translate the complete document, not just the data page: personal data, issue and expiry dates, issuing authority, endorsements, extensions and the visa and stamp pages, where the authority requires them. The translation is permanently attached to a copy of the original.
- Every field reproduced, including passport number and serial number
- Stamps, seals and signatures described, with the stamp text translated
- A translator's note wherever a passage is illegible or damaged
- Certification clause, stamp and signature on every translation
Typical pitfalls with Arabic identity documents
The most important point is the spelling of your name. The reference is the spelling in the machine readable zone of the passport, which follows the ICAO standard. We use that form in the translation, and the same form should appear in your birth certificate, marriage certificate, diplomas and every other translation. Inconsistent spellings lead to queries from authorities or to doubts about identity.
Other typical questions concern Hijri dates, which we supplement with the Gregorian date, and ID cards that state profession, religion or marital status, which we translate faithfully without omitting or adding anything.
Apostille or legalisation: do you need it?
Passports and ID cards are identity documents, so an apostille or legalisation is generally not part of the process. It can be different for civil register extracts. Because requirements vary by country of origin and receiving office, a quick check with the authority is the safest route. The certified translation itself is recognised by Austrian authorities, courts and universities.

Frequently asked questions about passport and ID translation
What clients ask us before placing an order.
It depends on the authority. For a bank account or an employer the data page is usually enough. The immigration authority and the registry office often want to see visas and endorsements as well. If in doubt, send us all pages and we translate exactly the scope you need.
A legible scan or photo is enough. The translation is attached to a copy of the document. Whether the authority also wants to see the original is up to them, and in most cases you present the passport at your appointment anyway.
Usually one to three working days for one to five pages. If your appointment is urgent, ask for express service. You receive the PDF first, the original follows by post or for pickup.
We use the Latin spelling from the machine readable zone of your passport. It is the reference point for every other translation. If an Austrian document with a particular spelling already exists, please let us know.
Dates in the Islamic calendar are reproduced as in the original and supplemented with the Gregorian date when it is stated in the document or can be converted unambiguously. The authority can then place the date without asking.
Yes, for example for presentation to an embassy or authority in an Arab country. Check with the receiving office whether an apostille or legalisation is required in addition.
