Arabic interpreter in Vienna: when every word counts
In a court hearing, a police interview, a notary appointment or a consent discussion in hospital, every statement has to arrive exactly as it was meant. An Arabic interpreter in Vienna makes sure that both sides understand each other and that what is said holds up legally and professionally.
At Fachdolmetscher I take on these assignments personally. I am Aliaa Azzouqa, MA, an interpreter with a master's degree in conference interpreting and a native Arabic speaker. I am fluent in Modern Standard Arabic and the Levantine dialect and work with speakers from every Arab country, from the Maghreb to the Gulf.
Assignments take place on site in Vienna and Graz, throughout Austria, or by video and telephone. You describe the occasion briefly, I confirm the appointment and prepare for it specifically.
Where we interpret in Vienna
Every setting has its own rules, its own terminology and its own pace. That is why we prepare for each appointment individually and match the mode of interpreting to the way the meeting runs.
Court and police
Hearings, interviews, witness statements and file inspections. Neutral, faithful to the word and confident with legal terminology.
Notary and lawyer
Purchase contracts, powers of attorney, company formations and legal advice. You understand what you sign before you sign it.
Registry office
Marriages, acknowledgements of paternity and name declarations, including the ceremonial part of the wedding if you wish.
Hospital and doctor
Consent discussions, diagnoses, antenatal classes, psychotherapy and rehabilitation. Sensitive and medically precise.
Authorities and youth welfare
Appointments with child and youth welfare services, the employment service, immigration offices, schools and social services.
Business and delegations
Negotiations, site visits, conferences, ministerial visits and embassy appointments, consecutive or simultaneous.
Consecutive, simultaneous, whispered or by video
Which mode of interpreting fits depends on the occasion, the number of participants and the format. We recommend the right mode when you enquire and, where needed, bring the necessary equipment into the conversation.
- Consecutive interpreting: the speaker pauses and I render the passage. The standard mode in court, at the police, notary, doctor and public authorities.
- Simultaneous interpreting: rendered in real time from a booth or with a portable system. For conferences, training sessions and delegation visits with a large audience.
- Whispered interpreting: I whisper simultaneously to one or two people. Ideal for site visits, meetings and court dates where only one person needs Arabic.
- Video and telephone interpreting: via Zoom, Teams or the platform of your choice. Often available at short notice and without travel, see our remote interpreting page.
My qualifications as your Arabic interpreter
I hold a bachelor's degree in translation and interpreting from the German Jordanian University and a master's degree in conference interpreting from the University of Graz. This training covers both worlds: the precision of document translation and the speed of simultaneous interpreting.
My clients include the Austrian Federal Ministry of the Interior, the Federal Ministry of Defence and the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, the Vienna police headquarters (Landespolizeidirektion Wien), the City of Vienna's child and youth welfare office (MA 11), the Brothers of Saint John of God hospital in Graz (Barmherzige Brüder), the Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman in Vienna, the European Commission, Caritas, GIZ and UNICRI.
What this means for you: familiarity with how courts and police work, with medical consent discussions, with child and youth welfare procedures and with the protocol of diplomatic appointments. Plus strict confidentiality, GDPR compliant handling and a non disclosure agreement on request.
Vienna, Graz and all of Austria
My office is at Wagramer Straße 2, 1220 Vienna, close to courts, authorities, hospitals and law firms across the city. Having studied in Graz, I also work regularly in Styria, among others for the Graz youth welfare office and the Barmherzige Brüder hospital.
For appointments in other provinces, whether Lower Austria, Burgenland, Linz, Salzburg or Innsbruck, I travel to you. At short notice, or when travel does not make sense, I interpret by video or telephone.
Please request on site appointments at least 48 hours in advance where possible. Remote interpreting is often possible at short notice.

Frequently asked questions about interpreting in Vienna
What you should know before booking.
For on site appointments I ask for at least 48 hours' notice so I can plan travel and preparation. Video interpreting is often possible at much shorter notice. For urgent appointments, ask anyway and I will do what I can.
Yes, hearings, interviews and witness statements are among my most frequent assignments, including for the Vienna police headquarters. Whether a court requires a court certified interpreter in a specific case is decided by the court itself. Please clarify this with the competent office, I am happy to advise.
Yes. I interpret Arabic German, Arabic English and German English in every combination. This is common, for example, with international delegations or business partners from the Gulf who negotiate in English.
Yes. I render everything that is said, completely and without personal judgement, in both directions. I advise neither party and pass nothing on. This applies in court just as much as in hospital or at the youth welfare office.
Interpreting assignments are charged by the hour, half day or full day, depending on duration and occasion, plus travel outside Vienna. You receive an individual quote in advance. The factors behind the price are explained on our pricing page.
I am a native speaker of Modern Standard Arabic and the Levantine dialect, that is Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Palestine. I work regularly with speakers from Iraq, Egypt, the Maghreb and the Gulf states. Tell me the country of origin and I prepare accordingly.
I ask for documents, the names of those involved, terminology and the planned schedule. For court or notary appointments a file extract or draft contract helps, for medical appointments the diagnosis. I treat all material in strict confidence.
Yes, regularly in Graz and throughout Austria by arrangement. For more distant locations, travel and, where necessary, accommodation are itemised in the quote. Alternatively I offer video and telephone interpreting.
